Saturday/Sunday 24/25th September - Bishops Stortford Open Meet The Sharks achieved a well-earned haul of 22 medals including 3 golds, 9 silvers and 5 bronze, plus 5 medals for places 4th to 6th at this years Bishops Stortford Open Meet held at Braintree Swimming Pool at Freeport. Considering it was so early in the gala season, it was a great result for all concerned.
Alex Thompson (11) led the way gaining golds in both the 50m Butterfly & 50m Breaststroke plus Silvers in the 50m Freestyle & 100m Breaststroke achieving PB's in all his events in the process
Emily Lane (15) competed in 7 events and gained top 3 finishes in all her events with a Gold in the 100m Backstroke, silver in the 50, 100 & 200m freestyle and the 100m IM plus bronze medals in the 50m fly & backstroke. Brother Joe Lane (10) added to the medal haul by achieving 3rd place in the 50m breaststroke and 5th place in the 50m backstroke. Amy stainer (14) gained bronze medals in 50 & 100m fly plus silver medals in the 50 & 100m freestyle & 50 backstroke. Ciara Flannery (10) continued the good run with a 5th place medal in the 100m breaststroke and 6th place in the 200m freestyle - beating her previous best time by a massive 15 seconds. She also managed 10th place in the 50m breaststroke, 11th in the 50 freestyle & 13th in the 100m IM. Backing that up, Ellie Stamp (13) only narrowly missed out on a medal with a gutsy 7th place in the 100m freestyle.
Matthew Thompson (15) swam a number of PB's in the tough 15 yrs & over boys category, gaining a best finish of 6th place in the 100m freestyle and 9th in the 50m freestyle. Of the remaining boys Alex Garrett (14) achieved a PB and 10th place in the 50m butterfly and Andy Boden (14) came 6th in the 50m breaststroke, 8th in the 100m IM and 12th in the 50m freestyle, backstroke & butterfly and another 12th in the 100m freestyle. Jeremy Dobson (14) also swam well with a 3 second PB in the 100m freestyle that earned him 9th place, plus 11th place finishes in the 50m freestyle & backstroke and 13th in the 50m fly.
Rounding things off with some great swims for the Sharks were Holly Buckingham (9) who came 28th in 50m Freestyle, 23rd in the 50 backstroke & 9th in the 50 breaststroke plus Rose Simpson (11) who finished 20th in the 100m Breaststroke. Young Amber Read (9) swam admirably in her first ever open meet achieving a PB and a creditable 20th place in both the 50m freestyle and breaststroke. Well done to all those that swam
Saturday June 18th - Canvey Open Meet Competing at a busy Canvey Open at Blackshots pool in Grays were a number of Sharks swimmers. Some great times were achieved with numerous PB's and a few county qualifying times already in the bag so early in the season. Sunday April 17th - Halstead Open Meet Taking part in the annual Halstead open meet at Braintree pool were 14 plucky Sharks swimmers who competed in 40 events and were rewarded with 18 medals for their considerable efforts! In the 9 year old age group Aaron Stone managed to knock 6 seconds off of his previous best time in the 50m freestyle, finishing 9th overall. Amongst the 10 year olds, Joe Lane finished 4th in both the 50m breast & 100m freestyle, whilst Ciara Flannery & Rachel Harris both produced a string of personal best times resulting in Ciara claiming 6th place in the 50m and 8th place in the 100m breast stroke with Rachel’s best finish being a creditable 16th in the 100m freestyle. 11 year old Alex Thompson led the way amongst his age group, achieving 3rd place in the 50m Fly and 4th place in the 50m breast. Janet Seaward & Yasmin Tennant both achieved personal best times in all their events, with Janet’s best finish being 17th in the 200m free and Yasmin’s 13th in the 50m breast. The sole 12 year old representative was Kayleigh Rowsell who achieved 3rd place in the 200m freestyle and 7th places in both the 50 & 100m freestyle. Amongst a strong 14 year old contingent, Alex Garrett finished 7th in the boys 50m freestyle, Scott Mizon 9th in the 50m Fly and Matthew Thompson 2nd & 3rd in the 100m freestyle & IM events respectively. Leading the way for the 14 year old girls was Emily Lane who achieved 1st places in the 50m free & back, 2nd in the 100m back, 3rd in the 100m free and 4th in the Individual Medley. She was closely followed by Shannon Rowsell who managed 2nd place in the 200m free and 3rd & 4th places in 50m & 100m backstroke events respectively. Rounding off a good medal haul for the girls was Amy Stainer with 3rd place in the 50m Fly & 4th place in the breast stroke.
March 26th/27th Essex Age Group championships Emily Lane & Matthew Thompson turned out for the Sharks in the final weekend of the championships at Braintree. Emily again qualified well to reach the final of the 100m backstroke, finishing 4th overall. She then followed things up with 12th place in the 14 YO girls 100m freestyle. Matthew Thompson rounded things off for the Maldon swimmers finishing a creditable 9th place in a very tough 14 YO boys 100m freestyle event.
Saturday March 12th - Harwich Minileague The final results for the Mini-league gala at Harwich were as follows:- 1st: Basildon 159 points 2nd: Clacton 151 points 3rd: Harwich 143 points 4th: Maldon 137 points For most of the evening the points were pretty tight, with not a lot separating the 4 teams. Unfortunately we just fell away at the end, but there were some great swims on the night. There were victories for:...... Joe Lane in the boys 10U back, Alice Pugh in the girls 13U 100m free, Amy Stainer in the girls open fly & open free, Alex Garrett in the boys open fly, Amy, Emily, Anisha & Gemma in the girls open 4x2x1 free, Alex, Lee, Matt & Andy in the boys open 4x2x1 free, Nick Baker in the boys 11U free, Gemma Mizon in the girls open back, Alex Thompson in the boys 11U fly, Ellie Stamp in the girls 13U fly, Jeremy Dobson in the boys 13U fly and Matthew Thompson in the boys Open breast.
There were also 2nd places for:..... Jeremy Dobson in the boys 13U free, Nick Baker in the boys 11U breast, Ciara Flannery in the girls 10U fly, Holly, Ciara, Emma, Ellie, Alice, Emily in the girls 6x1 breast relay and Emily Lane in the girls Open breast.

March 12th/13th Essex Age Group championships Emily Lane & Ciara Flannery made the early starts over the weekend to represent the club in the second block events at this year's Essex Age Group swimming championships. Both swimmers were in good form at the Garons Park pool in Southend. Emily continued her fine run of results achieving personal bests in the 50m fly and the 200m backstroke events coming 10th and 11th places respectively. Ciara, swimming in her first Essex Championships produced a fantastic swim to finish 9th in the 9 year old girls 50m breaststroke in a personal best time of 52.06 seconds. The final weekend of the championships takes place at Braintree Swimming Centre on the 26/27th March
February 19th/20th Essex Age Group championships The new Garons Park Pool at Southend was the venue for the first weekend of events in this year's Essex Age Group swimming championships. Taking part in this opening weekend were 4 swimmers from the Sharks, who had achieved the relevant qualifying times to be able to compete. Congratulations to Emily Lane who led the way by becoming the first Sharks swimmer to qualify for a County final by achieving one of the fastest 6 times in the qualifying heats. After achieving 3rd place in the 50m freestyle final on Saturday, Emily then followed things up by qualifying for the 50m backstroke final on the Sunday, achieving 4th place overall. She then narrowly missed out on a place in the 100m IM final by getting the 8th fastest time overall. Also competing in the Girl's 50m Freestyle were Amy Stainer and Kayleigh Rowsell, both making their first apperances in the Championships. Both put in creditable swims with Amy finishing 21st overall in her Age Group and Kayleigh 22nd. Representing the boys was Matthew Thompson who put in a couple of strong performances in the Boys freestyle events - over 200m finishing 13th and over 50m finishing 9th. The Championships continue over 2 further weekends during March. Well done to all those who qualified.
February 5th Basildon Phoenix Novice Gala Maldon Sharks had another successful day at the pool on Saturday when 14 plucky swimmers attended the Basildon Phoenix Swimming Club Open Meet at Blackshots pool in Grays.
In the 9 yr old events both Holly Buckingham & Rachel Harris were swimming in their first ever Open Meet - both performed admirably with Holly 1st and Rachel 7th in the breast stroke followed by Rachel 13th & Holly 15th overall in the free.
In the 10 yr old events Joe Lane finished 3rd in the breast & backstroke and 8th in his first ever IM, whilst in the age group above Janet Seaward came 10th in the freestyle and narrowly missed out on a medal in the breast stroke by finishing 7th.
The 12 year old girls event was dominated by Ellie Stamp who came away with 4 first place medals in the back, breast, fly & IM whilst Katie Fowler was also amongst the medals with a 5th place in the breast stroke.
Out of the 13 year olds, Amy Stainer picked-up 2 winners medals in the IM & Fly, plus a speeding ticket for achieving a county qualifying time with a great swim in the backstroke. Alice Pugh picked up hard-fought 2nd places in the IM & Fly, whilst in the boys events Gareth Dobson came 4th & 5th in the breast stroke & freestyle respectively with brother Jeremy achieving 5th place in the back, 4th places in the IM and Fly and an excellent 1st place in the free.
In the 14 year old age group Scott Mizon was consistent, picking up four different 6th places finishes with Matt Thompson trumping those feats by achieving a full set of medals of 1st in the IM, 2nd in the breast and 3rd in the fly.
In the older groups, 15 yr old Lauren Willars was swimming in her first Open gala in over a year and swam well with creditable 3rd places in the back & free whilst Gemma Mizon finished things off with 2 first places in the fly & IM in the 16 & over Age group.
With a total of 29 medals and numerous PB’s it was another successful outing for the Sharks swimmers.
January 22nd 2011 - Bishops Stortford 200m Open Meet The Sharks took a squad of 11 plucky swimmers to compete in the Bishops Stortford 200m Open Meet at Braintree pool on Saturday. With a total of 14 medals, numerous heat wins and 14 PB’s from 16 swims, it was a successful day all round for the inexperienced Sharks team.
Emily Lane started the day off well with a PB and overall 3rd place in the Girls IM. Next came the Girls freestyle, where there was a brave swim by Ciara Flannery, achieving 2nd place overall in her first ever 200 event. This was followed by 3rd places for Ellie Stamp & Amy Stainer, a 4th for Shannon Rowsell, 5th for Alice Pugh & Gemma Mizon and a 7th place for Kayleigh Rowsell, all in their respective age groups. All achieved PB’s.
In the Boys Breaststroke Alex Thompson achieved a creditable 5th place overall in his age group in his first ever swim over 200m and then in the Boys IM brother Matthew Thompson was placed 3rd with another PB.
In the Girls Backstroke, Ellie Stamp achieved another 3rd place and Emily Lane and Shannon Rowsell achieved 2nd & 3rd places overall in the 14 year old age group. Joe Lane then produced a gutsy swim and a great time in the boys free, but was unlucky to be DQ’d.
Saving the best until last and to round off a successful day, were great swims and well-deserved first places for Ciara Flannery and Ellie Stamp in the Girls Breaststroke.
